Our Heritage
When people hear the name Koh-i-Noor, they instantly think of one of the most famous diamonds in the world. This legendary gem, now a part of the British Crown Jewels, has a history full of wars, royal families, and intrigue. But what if we told you that Koh-i-Noor has a twin one just as magnificent but far less known? Enter the Darya-i-Noor, a stunning pink diamond that has been hidden from the limelight for centuries.
The Darya-i-Noor, which means "Sea of Light" in Persian, is one of the largest and most beautiful diamonds in the world. Weighing around 182 carats, it is a rare pale pink diamond with a rich history dating back to the Mughal Empire. Unlike the Koh-i-Noor, which changed hands multiple times through war and conquest, the Darya-i-Noor has remained relatively untouched in Iran for over two centuries.
Historians believe that the Darya-i-Noor was originally mined from the famous Golconda mines in India, just like the Koh-i-Noor. The Mughals, known for their love of gemstones, treasured this diamond and kept it in their vast collection. It was later taken by the Persian ruler Nader Shah in 1739 during his invasion of India, along with many other priceless gems.
After Nader Shah’s assassination, the diamond stayed in Persian hands, passing from ruler to ruler. Today, it is a part of the Iranian Crown Jewels and is displayed in the Central Bank of Iran in Tehran.
Despite being one of the largest pink diamonds in the world, the Darya-i-Noor never gained the same level of fame as the Koh-i-Noor. One reason is its location; it has remained in Iran, away from the global spotlight. Another reason is that, unlike the Koh-i-Noor, it was never recut or modified to fit European tastes. Instead, it has kept its original charm, retaining the beauty admired by Mughal and Persian rulers.
The Koh-i-Noor and the Darya-i-Noor are believed to have once been part of a single, even larger diamond. Some experts suggest that the Great Table Diamond, a massive gemstone described in historical records, was cut to create these two famous jewels. While the Koh-i-Noor was reshaped and placed in the British Crown Jewels, the Darya-i-Noor kept its large, table-cut form, making it unique among famous diamonds.
Though it may not be as well-known as its twin, the Darya-i-Noor remains one of the most remarkable diamonds in history. Its pale pink hue, massive size, and royal legacy make it a true gem in every sense. Brands like Sanghvi & Sons play an essential role in preserving and celebrating such treasures. While the Koh-i-Noor continues to make headlines, the Darya-i-Noor quietly shines in the shadows, waiting for the world to remember its story.
Perhaps one day, this forgotten twin will finally receive the recognition it deserves in the world of fine gems.
